Sir Richard Sykes, chair of NHS London, officially opened the new wing of the education centre at
Mile End Hospital today on Monday 15 June 2009.

The centre cost £3m and provides five training rooms and a conference facility holding capable of
seating 108 people. The investment is a further demonstration of NHS Tower Hamlets
commitment to learning and continuous development of its staff and will provide modern, easily
accessible facilities including; interactive white boards, PowerPoint facilities, video conferencing
and laptops.

Sir Richard said: “I am delighted to be formally opening this excellent modern education facility.
The NHS in London is committed to ensuring that all of our staff have access to the best training
possible and this centre is a credit to all those who helped in its development. NHS Tower
Hamlets obviously recognises the vital role of continuing education and professional training in
21st century healthcare”

New facilities
The centre will provide five additional training rooms and a large conference facility holding 108
people. Smart interactive white boards, PowerPoint facilities, video conferencing and laptops are
now available. This additional space will provide staff with facilities to support their learning and
continuous development, through the delivery of education workshops, courses and mandatory
training.

Local artist Gillian Burrows was commissioned by NHS Tower Hamlets to produce artwork on a
large scale to complement the new building’s interior. She incorporated the borough of Tower
Hamlets and NHS Tower Hamlets in eight vibrant pieces that hang in the centre.
