London became Gillian’s adopted city nearly forty years ago, and working from her Docklands studio it continues to inspire her today. Her canvases are often still lifes of London, as if Gillian has flung open her studio windows with a burst of enthusiasm and transferred diverse elements from our cultural legacy into new settings on canvas. The City’s rich mix of people, iconic buildings, historic and contemporary associations are distilled into simple shapes or mere outlines which we can instantly identify. Her compositions reveal an artist who is equally confident working with realism as she is with abstraction, ranging from small, finely observed architectural portraits in pen and watercolour to huge powerful acrylic paintings saturated in vibrant colours.
